Quranic Verses About Hajj
Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, holds profound significance in Islam, being one of the five pillars of the faith. Every able-bodied Muslim is obligated to undertake this spiritual journey at least once during their lifetime, provided they have the financial means to do so.
Hajj is not merely a physical journey but a spiritual one as well. It symbolises the unity of Muslims from all corners of the world, regardless of race, nationality, or social status. The rites of Hajj commemorate the sacrifice and devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (AS).
They are performed between the 8th and 13th of Dhul-Hijjah of the Islamic Calendar, providing Muslims with the opportunity to seek forgiveness, purify their souls, and strengthen their faith.

How Many Times Is the Word Hajj Mentioned in the Quran?
While the exact term “Hajj” is mentioned twelve (12) times in eight (8) verses, Allah SWT talks about the Annual Pilgrimage about twenty-seven (27) times in the Holy Quran. Allah SWT talks about Hajj in Surah al-Baqarah, Surah al-Maida, Surah Imran, Surah Fath, Surah Hajj, and Surah Tawba.
Why Is Hajj Important?
One of the primary reasons why Hajj is considered so sacred in Islam is its potential to absolve sins and purify the soul. By embarking on this journey and sincerely performing the prescribed rituals, Muslims believe they can wipe away their past transgressions and start anew before Allah SWT.
It is an opportunity for Muslims to observe God, seek forgiveness, repentance, and self-renewal, fostering a deeper connection with their Creator.
The rituals symbolise the soul’s journey towards spiritual elevation, self-discipline, and devotion to the divine. As pilgrims walk around the Kaaba, the sacred House of Allah, it symbolises their eternal commitment to the Almighty and their detachment from material pursuits.
Quranic Verses about Hajj
The fifth pillar of Islam, Hajj, is mandatory for all financially and physically able Muslims at least once in their life. According to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), “One who comes to this House for Hajj and avoids all lewdness and sins, he returns as he was on the day his mother gave birth to him.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
In the Holy Quran, several Ayahs offer valuable guidance on performing Hajj, illuminating the sacred pilgrimage’s essential rituals and practices. For example, Surah al-Baqarah teaches us how to perform Hajj in a righteous way while highlighting allowed and forbidden acts.
Furthermore, Surah al-Imran states the significance of Makkah, calling it the first place where Allah SWT was worshipped by Prophet Ibrahim (AS). Here is a list of the Quranic verses about Hajj.
From Surah Al-Baqarah
“And [mention] when We made the House a place of return for the people and [a place of] security. And take, [O believers], from the standing place of Abraham a place of prayer. And We charged Abraham and Ishmael, [saying], “Purify My House for those who perform Tawaf and those who are staying [there] for worship and those who bow and prostrate [in prayer].” [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:125]
“Indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs ‘umrah – there is no blame upon him for walking between them. And whoever volunteers good – then indeed, Allah is appreciative and Knowing.” [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:158]
“They ask you, [O Muhammad], about the new moons. Say, “They are measurements of time for the people and for Hajj.” And it is not righteousness to enter houses from the back, but righteousness is [in] one who fears Allah. And enter houses from their doors. And fear Allah that you may succeed.” [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:189]
“And complete the Hajj and Umrah for Allah. But if you are prevented, then [offer] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And do not shave your head until the sacrificial animal has reached its place of slaughter. And whoever among you is ill or has an ailment of the head [making shaving necessary must offer] a ransom of fasting [three days] or charity or sacrifice. And when you are secure, then whoever performs ‘umrah [during the Hajj months] followed by Hajj [offers] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And whoever cannot find [or afford such an animal] – then a fast of three days during Hajj and of seven when you have returned [home]. Those are ten complete [days]. This is for those whose family is not in the area of al-Masjid al-Haram. And fear Allah and know that Allah is severe in penalty.” [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:196]
“Hajj is [during] well-known months, so whoever has made Hajj obligatory upon himself therein [by entering the state of Ihram], there is [to be for him] no sexual relations and no disobedience and no disputing during Hajj. And whatever good you do – Allah knows it. And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is fear of Allah. And fear Me, O you of understanding.” [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:197]
“There is no blame upon you for seeking bounty from your Lord [during Hajj]. But when you depart from ‘Arafat, remember Allah at al- Mash’ar al-Haram. And remember Him, as He has guided you, for indeed, you were before that among those astray.” [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:198]
“And when you have completed your rites, remember Allah like your [previous] remembrance of your fathers or with [much] greater remembrance. And among the people is he who says, “Our Lord, give us in this world,” and he will have in the Hereafter no share.” [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:200]
“But among them is he who says, “Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.” [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:201]
“And remember Allah during [specific] numbered days. Then whoever hastens [his departure] in two days – there is no sin upon him, and whoever delays [until the third] – there is no sin upon him – for him who fears Allah. And fear Allah and know that unto Him you will be gathered.” [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:203]
From Surah Al-Imraan
“Indeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at Makkah – blessed and a guidance for the worlds.” [Surah al-Imraan 3:96]
“In it are clear signs [such as] the standing place of Abraham. And whoever enters it shall be safe. And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House – for whoever is able to find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves – then indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds.” [Surah al-Imraan 3:97]
From Surah Al-Maida
“O you who have believed, fulfil [all] contracts. Lawful for you are the animals of grazing livestock except for that which is recited to you [in this Qur’an] – hunting not being permitted while you are in the state of Ihram. Indeed, Allah ordains what He intends.” [Surah al-Maida 5:1]
“O you who have believed, do not violate the rites of Allah or [the sanctity of] the sacred month or [neglect the marking of] the sacrificial animals and garlanding [them] or [violate the safety of] those coming to the Sacred House seeking bounty from their Lord and [His] approval. But when you come out of Ihram, then [you may] hunt. And do not let the hatred of a people for having obstructed you from al-Masjid al-Haram lead you to transgress. And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.” [Surah al-Maida 5:2]
“O you who have believed, Allah will surely test you through something of the game that your hands and spears [can] reach, that Allah may make evident those who fear Him unseen. And whoever transgresses after that – for him, is a painful punishment.” [Surah al-Maida 5:94]
“O you who have believed, do not kill game while you are in the state of Ihram. And whoever of you kills it intentionally – the penalty is an equivalent from sacrificial animals to what he killed, as judged by two just men among you as an offering [to Allah] delivered to the Ka’bah or an expiation: the feeding of needy people or the equivalent of that in fasting, that he may taste the consequence of his deed. Allah has pardoned what is past, but whoever returns [to violation], then Allah will take retribution from him. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Owner of Retribution.” [Surah al-Maida 5:95]
“Lawful to you is a game from the sea and its food as provision for you and the travellers, but forbidden to you is a game from the land as long as you are in the state of Ihram. And fear Allah to whom you will be gathered.” [Surah al-Maida 5:96]
From Surah Al-Tawba
“So travel freely, [O disbelievers], throughout the land [during] four months but know that you cannot cause failure to Allah and that Allah will disgrace the disbelievers.” [Surah al-Tawba 9:2]
“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them. And fight against the disbelievers collectively as they fight against you collectively. And know Allah is with the righteous [who fear Him].” [Surah al-Tawba 9:36]
“Indeed, the postponing [of restriction within sacred months] is an increase in disbelief by which those who have disbelieved are led [further] astray. They make it lawful one year and unlawful another year to correspond to the number made unlawful by Allah and [thus] make lawful what Allah has made unlawful. Made pleasing to them is the evil of their deeds, and Allah does not guide the disbelieving people.” [Surah al-Tawba 9:37]
From Surah Al-Hajj
“And proclaim to the people the Hajj [pilgrimage]; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass.” [Surah al-Hajj 22:27]
“And [mention, O Muhammad], when We designated for Abraham the site of the House, [saying], “Do not associate anything with Me and purify My House for those who perform Tawaf and those who stand [in prayer] and those who bow and prostrate.” [Surah al-Hajj 22:26]
“That they may witness benefits for themselves and mention the name of Allah on known days over what He has provided for them of [sacrificial] animals. So eat of them and feed the miserable and poor.” [Surah al-Hajj 22:28]
“Then let them end their untidiness and fulfil their vows and perform Tawaf around the ancient House.” [Surah al-Hajj 22:29]
“For you, the animals marked for sacrifice are benefits for a specified term; then their place of sacrifice is at the ancient House.” [Surah al-Hajj 22:33]
“And [mention, O Muhammad], when We designated for Abraham the site of the House, [saying], “Do not associate anything with Me and purify My House for those who perform Tawaf and those who stand [in prayer] and those who bow and prostrate.” [Surah al-Hajj 22:36]
“Certainly, has Allah showed to His Messenger the vision in truth. You will surely enter al-Masjid al-Haram, if Allah wills, in safety, with your heads shaved and [hair] shortened, not fearing [anyone]. He knew what you did not know and has arranged before that a conquest near [at hand].” [Surah al-Fath]

Hadiths about Hajj
The Messenger (PBUH) of Allah SWT performed Hajj once in his lifetime in the year 632 CE (10 AH). During his life, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) stated the importance of Hajj on several occasions. Some of them are listed below:
Hadith 1 – The Reward for Tawaf
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “A person who circumambulates this House (the Kaaba) seven times and performs the two Rak’at Salat (of Tawaf) in the best form possible will have his sins forgiven.”
Hadith 2 – Hajj Must Be Performed Once in the Lifetime
Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated that one day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed people saying: “O people! Allah has prescribed Hajj upon you, so perform it.“
A man asked, ‘Every year, O Messenger of Allah?’
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) kept silent. When the man repeated his question thrice, the Prophet (PBUH) said: “Had I answered in the affirmative, it would have become a (yearly) obligation, and this would have been beyond your capacity.”
Then he added: “Leave me alone so long as I leave you alone (i.e. do not ask questions about things I didn’t mention). What caused the destruction of the people before you was that they used to ask so many questions and disagree with their Prophets.
So when I command you to do something, do it to the extent of your ability, and if I forbid you from doing something, avoid it.” (Muslim)
Hadith 3 – Hajj Is the Best Deed
Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated that the Prophet was asked, “Which deed is the best?” The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Belief in Allah SWT and His Messenger (PBUH).”
He was asked again, “What is next?” The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Jihad [striving] in the cause of Allah.”
He was further asked, “And what is next?” He said, “Hajj Mabroor [i.e. Hajj accepted by Almighty Allah].” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
What Verse in the Quran Talks about Mecca?
In the heart of Islam lies a city of profound significance – Makkah, cradling the revered Holy Kaaba within its ancient embrace. This sacred city is a living testament to Islam’s rich history and spiritual heritage. It is Makkah where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was born, and most Quranic verses were revealed. Allah SWT mentions Makkah as Bakkah in verse 93 of Surah al-Imran:
إِنَّ أَوَّلَ بَيْتٍ وُضِعَ لِلنَّاسِ لَلَّذِي بِبَكَّةَ مُبَارَكًا وَهُدًى لِّلْعَالَمِينَ
Translation: “Indeed the first house to be set up for mankind is the one at Bakkah, blessed and a guidance for all nations.” [Holy Quran, 3:96]
Translation: “Blessed is this Book, which We have sent down, confirming what was [revealed] before it, so that you may warn the Mother of Cities and those around it. Those who believe in the Hereafter believe in it, and they are watchful of their prayers.” [Holy Quran, 6:92]
Importance of Hajj in the Quran
Stating the importance of Hajj in the Holy Quran, Allah SWT says, “Surely the first House ˹of worship˺ established for humanity is the one at Bakkah—a blessed sanctuary and a guide for ˹all˺ people. In it are clear signs and the standing place of Abraham. Whoever enters it should be safe. Pilgrimage to this House is an obligation by Allah upon whoever is able among the people. And whoever disbelieves, then surely Allah is not in need of ˹any of His˺ creation.” [Surah Al-Imran, 96:97]
“Perform the pilgrimage and the visit (to Makkah) for Allah.” [Surah al Baqarah, 196]
