Garden of Abu Talha (RA) – What Muslims Can Learn From Abu Talha (RA)

However, when Allah SWT revealed the following verse, “You will not attain unto piety until you spend of that which Ye love,” [Holy Quran, 3: 92] Abu Talha (RA) made the decision to give away his beloved garden in the name of Allah SWT.

Even though Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was amazed, he (PBUH) advised Abu Talha (RA) to distribute Bir Ha among his own people. Here is everything you need to know about the garden of Abu Talha (RA).

It is said that the beautiful garden of Abu Talha (RA) was located near Masjid-e-Nabawi and was often visited by the Messenger (PBUH) of Allah SWT, who would relax in the garden and drink the sweet water from its well.

Anas (RA) said, “Abu Talha (RA) owned the best gardens in Madinah, and they were more in number than those of any other Ansari. One of his gardens was known by the name of Bir Ha, which was his most favourite resort. It was close to the Prophet’s (PBUH) Mosque, and the water of its well was sweet and abundant. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) often visited that garden and drank water from its well.”

Where Is the Garden Located?

It is said that Bir Ha, the famous garden of Abu Talha (RA), was located near Masjid-e-Nabawi in Madinah, Saudi Arabia. What Is the Significance of the Garden of Abu Talha (RA)?

Bir Ha, the garden of Abu Talha (RA), has great significance in Islamic history. However, the one thing that distinguishes Bir Ha from all other gardens is that despite being one of Abu Talha’s (RA) most cherished properties, he donated it in the name of Allah SWT. This act of Abu Talha (RA) has taught Muslims that in order to attain the ultimate reward from Allah SWT in the Hereafter, one must give the best of their wealth to charity.

Why Did Abu Talha (RA) Give His Garden to Allah SWT?

Anas ibn Malik (RA) reported that when the following verse was revealed, “You will not attain unto piety until you spend of that which Ye love,” [Holy Quran, 3: 92] Abu Talha (RA) went to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and told him that he wanted to give his dearest possession, the garden (Bir Ha), in the name of Allah SWT.

To this, the Messenger (PBUH) of Allah SWT replied, “O Abu Talha! Bakhin, Bakh” (an Arabic expression used to denote approval and surprise). He (PBUH) told Abu Talha (RA) that it is indeed a profitable trade and that his charity is accepted, however, he should give the garden to his relatives.

Quran Verse and Prophet Muhammad’s (SAW) Advice to Abu Talha (RA)

According to narrations, Allah SWT revealed the Quranic verse, “You will not attain unto piety until you spend of that which Ye love.” [Holy Quran, 3: 92]

After listening to this verse, Abu Talha (RA) came to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and told him about a wish in his heart. He said. “O, Prophet (PBUH) of Allah SWT! I love Bir Ha very much. As Allah SWT wants us to spend precisely that which we love, I make over that garden to be spent in the path of Allah SWT as you please.”

The Messenger (PBUH) of Allah SWT was so pleased that he replied, “What a fine present (to Allah SWT)! I think it would be best utilised if you distribute it among your own heirs.” So, Abu Talha (RA) acted upon Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) advice and distributed his beloved garden (Bir Ha) among his cousins and nearest relatives.
