Rewards of praying in the 3 sacred mosques

The Messenger (PBUH) of Allah SWT has told us that there are three mosques to which Muslims from all over the world travel to worship; Masjid Al Haram in Makkah, Masjid Al-Aqsa in Jerusalem, and Masjid An-Nabawi in Madinah.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “The prayer in my Masjid (Masjid An-Nabawi) is better than one thousand (1000) prayers in any other masjid with the exception of Masjid Al-Haram, and a prayer in Masjid Al-Haram is better than one hundred thousand (100,000) prayers.”

Abu Ad-Dardaa (RA) reported on the authority of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) that the reward for praying at the Sacred Mosque (in Makkah) is equal to the reward for one hundred thousand regular prayers; the reward for praying at the Prophet’s Mosque (in Madinah) is equal to the reward for one thousand regular prayers, and the reward for praying at the Al-’Aqsa Mosque (in Jerusalem) is equal to the reward for five hundred regular prayers. (Bazzaar)

In light of the aforementioned hadith, the rewards for praying in the three sacred mosques are as follows:

  • Masjid Al Aqsa (Palestine): 500 prayers
  • Masjid An-Nabawi (Madinah): 1,000 prayers
  • Masjid Al Haram (Makkah): 100,000 prayers

Reward for praying at Masjid Al-Haram

The Messenger (PBUH) of Allah SWT has said that the reward of praying one Salah at Masjid Al Haram is equivalent to one hundred thousand times (100,000) prayers. This applies to both the obligatory (Farz) Salah and the voluntary (Nawwafil).

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “One prayer in my mosque (in Madinah) is better than one thousand prayers elsewhere, except in Al-Masjid Al-Haram (in Makkah), and one prayer in the Al-Masjid Al-Haram is better than one hundred thousand prayers elsewhere.” (Al-Abaani, Sahih)

What is the reward for praying in Masjid Al-Aqsa?

praying in masjid al aqsaProphet Muhammad (PBUH) said, ”The prayer of a person in his house is a single prayer; his prayer in the Masjid of his people has the reward of 27 prayers; his prayer in the Masjid in which the Friday prayer is observed has the reward of 500; his prayer in Masjid Al-Aqsa (i.e. Al-Aqsa Sanctuary) has a reward of 500 prayers; his prayer in my Masjid (the Prophet’s (PBUH) Masjid in Madinah) has a reward of 1,000 prayers, and the prayer in the Sacred Masjid (Masjid Al Haram) has the reward of 100,000 prayers”. (Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah)

What does the Quran say about Masjid Al Aqsa?

Allah SWT in the Holy Quran says, “Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid Al Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.” (Holy Quran, 17:1)

Rewards for praying in Masjid Al-Nabawi

Abu Huraira (RA) narrated that the Messenger (PBUH) of Allah SWT said, “A prayer in this mosque of mine is a thousand times greater than a prayer in other than it, except for the Masjid al-Haram.” (Sahih Bukhari; Sahih Muslim)

prayer in Makkah is equal to…

Allah SWT’s Messenger (PBUH) said, “The prayer in my Masjid (Masjid An-Nabawi) is better than one thousand (1000) prayers in any other masjid with the exception of Masjid Al-Haram, and a prayer in Masjid Al-Haram is better than one hundred thousand (100,000) prayers.”

What are the benefits of praying in a mosque?

Even though Muslims can pray (perform Salah) anywhere and at any time, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has advised Muslim men to ensure that they perform the congregational prayers in a masjid (mosque) as it doubles the reward:

“Only will maintain (the) mosque of Allah SWT (the one) who believes in Allah SWT and the Day the Last, and establishes the prayer and gives the zakat and not fear except Allah SWT. Then perhaps those, [that] they are the guided ones.” (At-Taubah 9:18)

Some benefits of praying in a Masjid are stated below:

Reward is multiplied

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has on several occasions mentioned the superiority of prayer in congregation compared to praying alone at home.

“The congregation prayer is more important than praying alone by folding up to twenty-seven degrees.”

The Messenger (PBUH) of Allah SWT said, “Prayer in congregation is twenty-seven times superior to the prayer offered by a person alone.”

This hadith indicates that the reward of prayer is multiplied for whoever seeks and performs Salah in a Masjid.

Avoid hypocrisy

Walking to a mosque and praying with fellow Muslim brothers creates a sense of unity and strengthens one’s faith in Islam. It also makes one more diligent and keeps away from hypocritical characteristics such as laziness in going to a Masjid to pray.

Allah SWT’s Messenger (PBUH) said, “Indeed, the hypocrites (seek to) deceive Allah SWT and (it is) He (SWT) who deceives them. And when they stand for the prayer, they stand lazily, showing off (to) the people and not they remember Allah SWT except a little.” (An-Nisa 4:142)

Protection from shaitan (Devil)

The primary purpose of Shaitan is to tempt a Muslim to disobey the commands of Allah SWT. Therefore, by praying at the Masjid, Muslims will keep themselves away from the Shaitan as he isn’t allowed to enter the mosque.

If three men in a village or in the desert make no arrangement for Salah in congregation, Satan must have certainly overcome them. So observe Salah in congregation, for the wolf eats up a solitary sheep that stays far from the flock.” (Sunan Abu Dawud)

It is said that Allah SWT forgives the sins of a person who follows His command and comes to the Masjid to perform Salah.

“Whoever wudu to pray and perfect his wudu, then goes to perform the prayer, and he is praying with man or congregation or in the mosque, then Allah SWT will forgive his sins.”

Why is it better to pray in congregation/jamaat?

muslims inside masjid al haramAllah SWT and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) have highly encouraged Muslims to pray in a Masjid.

Abu Huraira (RA) narrated that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Whoever goes to the mosque in the morning and evening, Allah will prepare for him a place in Paradise for every morning and evening.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

Allah SWT in the Holy Quran: “O you who believe! When you are called to congregational (Friday) prayer, hasten to the remembrance of God and leave off-trade. That is better for you if you but knew.” (Holy Quran, 62:9)

The Messenger (PBUH) of Allah SWT also told his Ummah, “The entire experience of attending the Mosque, including every step taken to the House of God, is rewarded.”

“He who purifies (performs Wudu’) himself in his house and then walks to one of the houses of Allah SWT (mosque) for performing an obligatory Salah, one step of his will wipe out his sins, and another step will elevate his rank (in Jannah).” (Muslim)

Reward for praying in Masjid Al-Quba

Located three kilometres to the south of Madinah, Masjid Al-Quba is the first-ever mosque built in the history of Islam. The reward of praying in Masjid Al-Quba is so great that Allah SWT has mentioned its significance in Verse 108 of Surah Tawbah in the Holy Quran:

“Never stand thou forth therein. There is a mosque whose foundation was laid from the first day of piety; it is more worthy of standing forth (for prayer) therein. In it are men who love to be purified, and Allah loveth those who make themselves pure.” (Holy Quran, Surah Tawbah 108)

The Messenger (PBUH) of Allah SWT said, “Whoever purifies himself in his house, then comes to the mosque of Quba and prays in it, he will have a reward like the Umrah pilgrimage.”

In which mosque do you get the same reward as Umrah if you pray inside?

According to a hadith of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), a person who purifies himself and then goes to Masjid Al-Quba to pray Salah will receive a reward equivalent to that of performing Umrah.
