Dua after Adhan

Allah SWT has made Islam a very beautiful and easy-to-follow religion for all Muslims. Salah is one of the most essential pillars of Islam. It is mandatory upon every Muslim to perform Namaz five times a day.

Therefore, to remind Muslims of the specific time of prayer, it is the duty of the muezzin to give Adhan – call to prayer. It is said that every person who utters the sentences of the Adhan will find their heart full of divine grace and purity. Read on to learn more about the dua after Adhan and its significance in Islam.

What Is the Adhan?

Derived from the Arabic language, the word Azan or Adhan literally means “to listen, to be informed about, or announcement.” However, in Islamic terminology, Adhan is the “call to prayer.” Adhan is recited five times a day (Fajr, Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha) by the muezzin to call out to the Muslim Ummah and invite them to come together in prayer.

Although it is not very long, the Adhan covers all the essentials of faith and expresses the significance of the Islamic practice of Salah (Namaz) by reminding people that they should leave everything and pray as Allah SWT calls upon them.

What Is the Importance of the Adhan in Islam?

Reciting the Adhan before prayer is a Sunnah of the Messenger (PBUH) of Allah SWT. It has been said that one must recite Adhan even if they are praying alone. The call to prayer testifies to the oneness of Allah SWT and affirms that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is the last Messenger.

Adhan also reminds Muslims that Salah is mandatory, and we must answer when called upon by Allah SWT. The significance of Adhan in Islam can be better understood by the following Hadiths:

  • “The person who recites it will get Syafaah (Intercession) of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)” (Sahih Bukhari)
  • “Making dua after reciting it is never rejected.” (Sunan Abi Daud)
  • “It is Sunnah to answer the Adhan.” (Sahih Muslim)
  • “Reciting Salawat after Adhan is mandatory.” (Sahih Muslim)
  • “Dua made between the Adhan and Iqamah is never rejected.” (Sunan Abi Daud)

Dua After Adhan in English

Jabir bin Abdullah (RA) narrated that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Whoever after listening to the Adhan says, ‘Allahumma Rabba hadhihi-dda` watit-tammah, was-salatil qa’imah, ati Muhammadan al-wasilata wal-fadilah, wa b`ath-hu maqaman mahmudan-il-ladhi wa`adtahu,’ then my intercession for him becomes binding on the day of resurrection.”

English Translation of the dua after Adhan: “O Allah! Lord of this perfect call (perfect by not ascribing partners to You) and of the regular prayer which is going to be established, give Muhammad the right of intercession and illustriousness and resurrect him to the best and the highest place in Paradise that You promised him (of)], then my intercession for him will be allowed on the Day of Resurrection”. (Sahih Al Bukhari, 614)

When asked about the way to recite the dua after Adhan, Amr Ibn Al-as narrated that he heard the Messenger (PBUH) of Allah SWT saying, ”When you hear the Muadhin (caller to prayer) then say as he says, then send salutations upon me (once the Adhan is finished, as during the Adhan, one is replying to the Adhan itself), as the one who asks Allah to send peace and salutations upon me, Allah sends ten mercies upon him.

Then ask Allah to grant me Al-wasilah, a place in Jannah, which is only befitting for one slave of Allah, and I hope that I am that one slave. Whoever asks Allah to grant me Al-Wasilah, (my) intercession (for him) becomes binding. (Muslim)

Etiquettes While Listening to the Adhan

Muslims are called to come together and join in prayer five times a day or 1825 times a year. But did you know that just like every other Islamic ritual, there is a Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on what to do during the Adhan. The etiquettes while listening to the Adhan are as follows:

Reply to the Adhan by Repeating after the Muezzin

When listening to the Adhan, the best thing that you can do is repeat after the muezzin. Several companions reported that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to repeat after the call to prayer in reply to the muezzin.

The Messenger (PBUH) of Allah SWT said, “Whenever you hear the Adhan, say what the Mu’adh-dhin is saying.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 612 In-book Reference: Book 10, Hadith 10)

“Some of my companions told me that Hisham had said, “When the Mu’adh-dhin said, “Haiyi `alassala (come for the prayer),” Muawiya said, “La hawla wala quwata illa billah (There is neither might nor any power except with Allah)” and added, “We heard your Prophet saying the same.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 613 In-book Reference: Book 10, Hadith 11)

“When you hear the Mu’adhin calling for the prayer, repeat his words then ask Allah’s blessings upon me, because the one who asks Allah’s blessings upon me once will be rewarded ten blessings by Allah.” (Muslim)

Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-As narrated: “I heard the Messenger (PBUH) of Allah SWT saying ‘When you hear the Adhan, repeat what the Mu’adhin says. Then ask Allah SWT to exalt my mention because everyone who does so will receive in return ten rewards from Allah SWT.

Then beseech Allah SWT to grant me Al-Wasilah (which is said in the dua above), which is a high rank in Jannah, fitting for only one of Allah’s SWT slaves; and I hope that I will be that man. If anyone asks Al-Wasilah for me, it becomes incumbent upon me to intercede for him.”’ (Sahih Muslim)

Be Considerate

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) through his hadith and Sunnah guided Muslims that when they hear Adhan, (call to prayer), they must leave everything that they are doing and listen attentively to the Adhan. While the Adhan is being given, you must not be distracted by anything. One might find the following directives helpful:

  • If you are talking to someone on the phone, end the call
  • Switch your phone to silent
  • Turn off the TV
  • Pause
  • Do not laugh

Even though there is no hadith to prove it, some Islamic scholars believe that talking during the Adhan is no less than a sin. Therefore, one must stop doing whatever they are doing (including recitation of the Holy Quran) and listen to the call to prayer.

What Do You Say During Fajr Adhan?

When during the Fajr Adhan the muezzin says:

Assalatu khairum-minan-naum.

“Prayer is better than sleep.”

Following the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) we must say:

“Idha sami‘tumun-nida’a Faqulu mithla ma yaqulul- mu’adhdhin.”  (Bukhari Kitabul-Adhan)

“Whenever you hear the Adhan, say what the Mu’adhdhin is saying.”

Therefore, when you hear the Adhan, you should repeat every phrase, word by word. However, when the muezzin recites “Hayya ‘alas-Salah and Hayya ‘alal-Falah,” you should say, “La haula wala quwwata illa billa-hil ‘aliyyil ‘Azim” which means: There is neither might nor any power except with Allah. (Muslim)

After listening to the Adhan you must then recite the Kalima, followed by As-Salawat Al-Ibrahim and the dua after Adhan.

Wa ‘anaa ‘ash-hadu ‘an laa ‘ilaaha ‘illallaahu wahdahu laa shareeka lahu wa ‘anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa Rasooluhu, radheetu billaahi Rabban, wa bi-Muhammadin Rasoolan wa bil’islaami deenan.”

“And I also bear witness that there is no deity has the right to be worshipped but Allah SWT alone, Who has no partner, and that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger. I am pleased with Allah SWT as my Lord, with Muhammad (peace be upon him) as my Messenger and with Islam as my religion.”

Allaahumma salli alaa Muhammadin wa alaa aali Muhammadin, kamaa sallayta alaa Ibraaheema wa alaa aali Ibraaheema innaka Hameedun Majeed. Allahumma Baarik alaa Muhammadin wa alaa aali Mohammadin kamaa baarakta alaa Ibraaheema wa alaa aali Ibraaheema innaka Hameedum Majeed

“O ALLAH, bestow your favor on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad as You have bestowed Your favor on Ibrahim and on the family of Ibrahim, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. O ALLAH, bless Muhammad and the family of Mohammad as You have blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.” (Al-Bukhari, The Book of Stories of the Prophet, Hadith 3370)

What Is the Dua for Parents?

Parents in every society and religion are given an honourable status. Children owe everything that is in their lives to their parents who sacrificed so much to raise them.

When they were no more than an embryo, their mother nourished them in her womb and went through unbelievable suffering and pain to bring them into this world, and even then, she raised her children with love and taught them to become good people. Similarly, fathers sacrifice their sleep and hunger countless times just to provide their children with the basic necessities and whatever else they desire.

Therefore, children must be kind to their parents, honour them, and treat them with love and care.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) once said that the best way to take care of your parents is by remembering them in your prayers. The Messenger (PBUH) of Allah SWT encouraged the Muslim Ummah to keep praying for parents by saying, “When a person dies, his deeds come to an end, except for three: A continuous charity, knowledge that others benefited from, and a pious son who (continues to) pray for him.” (Sahih Muslim)

Allah SWT in Surah Al Isra tells us the dua that we should pray for the forgiveness of our parents:

“Rabbirhamhuma kama rabbayanee sagheera”

“And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, ‘My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small.’” (Holy Quran, Surah Al Isra, Ayah 24)

Another dua for parents is as follows:

“Rabbi ighfir lee waliwalidayyawaliman dakhala baytiya mu/minan walilmu/mineena walmu/minatiwala tazidi aththalimeena illatabaran”

“My Lord, forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house a believer and the believing men and believing women. And do not increase the wrongdoers except in destruction.” (Holy Quran, Surah Nuh, Verse 28)

Whether it is in the lives of our parents or after their death, as Muslims, we should pray for their long and healthy life, for the forgiveness of their sins, and for them to be blessed with the highest rank in Jannah.
