What Is the Day of Arafah?

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Hajj is ‘Arafah.” (Nasa’i) Held on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, the Day of Arafah is a very virtuous and sacred day for Muslims worldwide. One thousand four hundred years ago, on this day, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) delivered the final sermon standing on the Mount of Arafat.

The Messenger of Allah SWT told his followers right and wrong and instructed them to live righteous life by following the teachings of the Holy Quran and his Sunnah.

Muslims worldwide spend the day repenting for their sins, fasting, and praying to Allah SWT for blessings and mercy.

However, the pilgrims spend the entire Day of Arafat sitting or standing on (or around) the Mount of Mercy, making supplications and asking for forgiveness. The Day of Arafah is also called “The Day of Spending.”

What to Do on the Day of Arafah?

While the pilgrims are instructed to reach the Arafat plains, spend the night under the open sky, and pray, those who aren’t able to perform Hajj should do the following acts to make the most of the sacred day:

Make Dua – Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said of the Day of ’Arafah, “In it, there is an hour in which no believing worshipper makes a supplication to Allah for good, except that Allah answers it for him, and he does not seek Allah’s protection from evil, except that He protects him from it.” (Tirmidhi)

Fast – Fasting on the Day of Arafah expiates the sins of the previous year, giving you a clean slate to live life righteously.

Make Dhikr – The Messenger of Allah SWT said, “There are no days greater and more beloved to Allah than these ten days of Dhul Hijjah, so increase in them your declaration of the ones of Allah (tahleel), your exaltation of him (takbeer), and your praise of him (tahmeed).” (Ahmed)

Seek Forgiveness – Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Shaitan is not considered more abased or more cast out or more contemptible or angrier on any other day than on the Day of ‘Arafah. That is only because he sees the descent of mercy and Allah’s disregard for great wrong actions. That is except from what he (Shaitan) was shown on the Day of Badr.” [Malik]

Give Qurani in the Name of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) – Abu Talhah (RA) reported, “The Prophet (PBUH) sacrificed for the one who could not sacrifice from his Ummah, one who bore witness to the Oneness of Allah and [his] Prophethood.” (Tabarani and Ahmad)

Hadiths about the Day of Arafah

Aisha (RA) said, “ The Messenger (PBUH) of Allah SWT said: “There is no day on which Allah ransoms more of His slaves from the Fire than the day of ‘Arafah. He draws close, then He boasts about them before the angels and says, ‘What do these people want?’” (Narrated by Muslim, 1348)

Abd-Allah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘As (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “The best of dua is dua on the day of ‘Arafah, and the best that I and the Prophets before me said is ‘La ilaha ill-Allah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahu’l-mulk wa lahu’l-hamd wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadir (There is no god but Allah Alone, with no partner or associate; Heis the dominion, to Him be praise, and He has power over all things).” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi)

Abu Huraira said Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “The promised day is the Day of Resurrection, the witnessed day is the day of Arafat, and the witnessing day is Friday (85:2-3). The sun does not rise or set over a day better than it. In it is a moment in which a believing servant does not supplicate to Allah for good but that Allah will answer him, and he does not seek refuge from any evil thing but that Allah will grant him refuge.”

In another hadith, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that on the Day of Arafah, God descends and says, “Come unto Me are My slaves, dishevelled, from every faraway pass, longing for My mercy. Then [He says to the Pilgrims] be your sins like unto the grains of sand, the drops of rain, the foam on the sea, yet I forgive them! So go forth, My slaves, with all forgiveness, and for whatever and whomever you have pleaded.”

Dua 1

Amr ibn Shu’ayb reported: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “The best supplication is that which is made on the day of Arafah. The best of it is what was said by myself and the prophets before me:

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ ، وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ ، وهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

Transliteration: laa ilaaha ill-allaahu, waḥdahu laa shareeka lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-ḥamdu, wa huwa ‛alaa kulli shay’in qadeer

Translation: None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone, without a partner. To Him belongs sovereignty and all praise, and He is over all things omnipotent.

Dua 2

اللّهُـمَّ إِنِّي أَعْوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الهَـمِّ وَ الْحُـزْنِ، والعًجْـزِ والكَسَلِ والبُخْـلِ والجُـبْنِ، وضَلْـعِ الـدَّيْنِ وغَلَبَـةِ الرِّجال

Transliteration: Allaahumma ‘innee ‘a’oothu bika minal-hammi walhazani, wal’ajzi walkasali, walbukhli waljubni, wa dhala’id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijaal

Translation: O Allah, I seek refuge in you from grief and sadness, from weakness and from laziness, from miserliness and from cowardice, from being overcome by debt and overpowered by men (i .e . others.)

Dua 3

ربَّنَا اغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَإِسْرَافَنَا فِي أَمْرِنَا وَثَبِّتْ أَقْدَامَنَا وانصُرْنَا عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَِ

Transliteration: Rabbana-ghfir lana dhunuubana wa israfana fi amrina wa thabbit aqdamana wansurna ‘alal qawmil kafireen

Translation: Our Lord! Forgive us our sins and anything We may have done that transgressed our duty: Establish our feet firmly, and help us against those that resist Faith

Which Ayat Was Revealed on the Day of Arafah?

Allah SWT revealed the following ayat on the Day of Arafah, This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favour upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.” [Holy Quran, Surah al Maa’idah 5:3]

A Jewish man once came to Umar ibn Al-Khattab (RA) and said, “O Commander of the Faithful! There is an ayah in your Book which you recite – if it had come to us, the Jews, we would have taken that day as an Eid (festival).”

Umar (RA) said, “Which ayah?”He said, ‘“Today I have perfected for you your religion and completed upon you My blessing, and I have chosen for you Islam as [your] religion”’.

Umar (RA) replied, “We surely know that day and the place where it was revealed upon the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He was standing at ‘Arafat on a Friday.” [Bukhari]

Fasting on the Day of Arafah

Fasting on the Day of Arafah is highly recommended. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “It (fasting on the Day of ‘Arafah) expiates the sins of the past year and the coming year (i.e. those sins will be forgiven).” [Muslim]

While pilgrims don’t generally fast on the Day of Arafah, Muslims worldwide should make the most of this auspicious opportunity. The Messenger (PBUH) of Allah SWT said, “The people of knowledge consider it recommended to fast on the Day of ’Arafah, except for those at ‘Arafat’.”  [Tirmidhi]

Stating the significance of fasting on the day of Arafah, the Messenger (PBUH) of Allah SWT said, “As for you staying till the evening in Arafah, then Allah descends to the sky of the Dunya, and He boasts about you to the Angels and says: ‘My slaves have come to Me, looking rough, from every deep valley hoping for My mercy, so if your sins were equivalent to the amount of sand or the drops of rain or like the foam on the sea I will forgive them. So go forth, My slaves! Having forgiveness and for what or who you have interceded for.” (Tabarani)
