Must Have Hajj Dua List

So you’re ready to travel for Hajj or Umrah, you may have packed your things and said farewell to friends and family. But there’s one other key thing you must not forget before you leave… your du’a list! It’s a travel essential. Hajj and Umrah are filled with opportunities to make du’a and ask Allah for whatever you want in this life and the next. Muslims will travel from all parts of the world seeking the same thing as you, connection with Allah. Your du’as are conversations with Allah, so learn and recite what you can, but ultimately prepare to pour your heart out to Him.

Why Should We Make Du’a?

إن ربكم حَييٌّ كريم، يستحيي من عبده إذا رفع يديه إليه، أن يَرُدَّهُمَا صِفْراً

‘Your Lord is Most Kind and Generous, and He dislikes turning away empty the hands of His servant when he raises them to Him.’ (Ibn Majah)

We know that Allah has power over absolutely everything, and He has the power to make our dreams come true. Making dua is a beautiful act of worship that helps us remember how needy we are of Allah’s Mercy and Generosity. Whether we are at home, at work, or even travelling we should always take advantage of opportunities to remember Allah and make dua to Him.

This is even more important when you are travelling to undertake the pilgrimage, either Hajj or Umrah, taking every step for Allah’s pleasure and seeking His Forgiveness, Mercy and Bounty. Throughout your Umrah you will have time to make dua on the coach, during tawaf, in between prayers, drinking zamzam, and whilst performing tawaf.

If you’re performing Hajj you may have lots of free time to make dua during your stay in Mina and on the plans of Arafah. So it’s important to make the most of every opportunity, planning what you want to make du’a for and making sure you make dua for everything, and everybody, you want.

What do you recite during Hajj?

This article will equip you with a selection of some of the best du’as you can recite during various stages of the Hajj or Umrah process. Don’t forget, dua is very personal so be sure to have a list of your own personal du’as for yourself, your family, friends and for everything that’s important to you. In the meantime you can draw upon the following Hajj du’as to support you on your journey.

Saving up for Hajj or Umrah

You can recite this du’a even before you’re ‘technically’ ready (looking for packages) to travel to Makkah, as part of your preparation with the intention of saving enough funds to perform Hajj.

اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ، وأَغْنِني بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ

Allāhumma k-finī bi ḥalālika ‘an ḣarāmika wa gh-ninī bi faḋlika ‘amman siwāka

O Allah! Suffice me with what You have made lawful instead of what You have made unlawful, and make me independent of all others besides You. (Al-Tirmidhi)

Du’a for Leaving Home

You’re all packed and ready, you’ve said goodbye to your friends and family, and so here’s the du’a you can recite when you’re leaving home ready for the journey of a lifetime.

بِسْمِ اللهِ، تَوَكَّلْـتُ عَلى اللهِ وَلا حَوْلَ وَلا قُـوَّةَ إِلاّ بِالله

Bismillāhi tawakkaltu ‘ala l-lāhi wa lā ḣawla wa lā quwwata illā bi l-lāh

In the name of Allah, I have placed my trust in Allah, and there is no power or might except by Allah. (Abu Dawud)

Du’a before Entering Ihram

You may be entering Ihram at the airport in your own country, on the plane or on your way to Makkah from Madinah. Ihram is a key part of your Umrah, and here’s the du’a you can say when entering this state.

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أُرِيْدُ الْعُمْرَةَ فَيَسِّرْهَا لِيْ وَتَقَبَّلْهَا مِنِّيْ

Allāhumma innī urīdu l-‘umrata fa yassirhā lī wa taqabbalhā minnī

O Allah, I intend to perform Umrah, so accept it from me and make it easy for me.

The Talbiyah

Upon entering the state of ihram, recite the Talbiyah as much as you can on your way to the Haram. You’ll likely be saying this a lot during your Hajj so try your best to memorise it.

لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ لَبَّيْكَ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَكَ

Labbayka allāhumma labbaik, labbaika lā sharīka laka labbaik, inna l-ḣamda wa n-ni’mata laka wa l-mulka lā sharīka laka

I am present! O Allah I am present! There is no associate with You. I am present! All praise and grace is due to You, and the dominion. There is no associate with You! (Muslim)

Du’a when Entering the Masjid

Upon arriving in Makkah for your Umrah or Hajj, you can easily be startled and amazed by the beauty of the masjid building and large gates, but don’t forget to recite the du’a for entering the masjid as you make your way inside.

اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ

Allāhumma f-taḣ lī abwāba rahmatika

O Allah! Open the doors of Your mercy for me. (Al-Nasai)

Du’a when Seeing the Ka’abah

Seeing the Ka’abah for the first time is an amazing experience, and many scholars of the past have used this moment to make du’a whilst feeling that spiritual high.

اللَّهُمَّ زِدْ هَذَا البَيْتَ تَشْريفًا وَتَعْظِيمًا وَتَكْرِيمًا وَمَهَابَةً، وَزِدْ مِن شَرَّفَهُ وكَرمَهُ مِمَّنْ حَجَّه أو اعْتَمَرَه تَشْرِيفًا وَتَكْرِيمًا وَتَعْظِيمًا وَبِرًّا

Allāhumma zid hādha l-bayta tashrīfan wa ta’żiman wa takrīman wa mahābatan, wa zid man sharrafahū wa karramahū mimman ḣajjahū wa’tamarahū tashrīfan wa ta’żiman wa takrīman wa birran

O Allah! Increase this House in honour and reverence and nobility and awe, and increase those who honour and revere it as pilgrims for Hajj and Umrah in nobility and goodness and status and righteousness (Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr, Ibn Taymiyyah)

Du’a after Every Prayer

During your Hajj or Umrah you will be praying lots of salah in the Haram with the hope of extra rewards. It’s important you constantly focus on trying to improve the quality of your salah, and this du’a eloquently asks for Allah’s help to do so.

اللَّهُمَّ أعِنَّيْ عَلَى ذِكْرِكَ، وَشُكْرِكَ، وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكَ

Allāhumma a’innī ‘alā dhikrika wa shukrika wa ḣusni ‘ibādatika

O Allah! Help me to remember You and thank You and help me to the best manner of worshipping You. (Al-Adab Al-Mufrad)

Du’a when Beginning Tawaf

Tawaf is an integral part of your Umrah, or Hajj and you will likely perform this many times. This du’a is something you can recite as you begin this great act.

اللّهُمّ إيْمَاناً بِكَ، وَتَصْدِيْقاً بِكِتَابِكَ وَسُنّةِ نَبِيِّكَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

Allāhumma īmānan bika wa taṣdīqan bi kitābika wa sunnati nabiyyika ṣalla l-lāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam 

O Allah! Out of faith in You, conviction in Your book and Your Prophet’s way. (Sunan al-Kubra)

Du’a Between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone

During your tawaf, it’s from the sunnah to recite the following du’a in the last straight of each round.

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Rabbanā ātinā fi d-dunyā ḣasanah wa fi l-ākhirati ḣasanah wa qinā ‘adhāba n-nār

Our Lord! Grant us success in this life, and success in the next life, and protect us from the Fire! [Q, 2:201]

Du’a when Drinking Zamzam

You will have plenty of opportunities to drink zamzam water during your Hajj or Umrah, and from hadith we know that zamzam is for what it is drunk for, so make sure to make plenty of du’a when drinking this water. 

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا

Allāhumma innī as’aluka ‘ilman nāfi’an wa rizqan ṭayyiban wa ‘amalan mutaqabbalan

O Allah! I ask you for beneficial knowledge, and pure sustenance, and accepted actions. (Ibn Majah)

Du’a during Arafah

The day of Arafah is one of the most iconic days of the whole Hajj. Millions of pilgrims standing and praying all day, making du’a to Allah for all things good in this life and the next. Make sure you have your du’a list ready for this day, whilst you can also recite the following:

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ بِيَدِهِ الْخَيْرُ يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

Lā ilāha illa l-lāhu waḣdahū lā sharīka lahū lahu l-mulku wa lahu l-ḣamdu wa huwa ‘alā kulli shay’in qadīr

There is no God but Allah alone, with no partner or associate, His is the dominion, to Him all praise is due, all goodness is in His hand, He grants life and death and He has power overall things. (Al-Tirmidhi)

Du’a when Greeting other Pilgrims

After completing the Hajj, and congratulating others, or meeting a Hajji who has returned home you can recite the following du’a:

قَبِلَ اللهُ حَجَّكَ وَكَفَّرَ ذَنْبَكَ وَأَخْلَفَ نَفَقَتَكَ

Qabila l-lāhu ḣajjaka wa kaffara dhambaka wa akhlafa nafaqata

May Allah accept your Hajj, and erase your sins, and replenish your provisions. (Al-Tabarani)

Du’a when Entering Madinah

Before or after Hajj or Umrah, groups will usually visit Madinah and spend time here to pray in Masjid Nabawi, give salam to the Prophet (SAW) and enjoy the peace felt in this city.

اَللهُمَّ هَذَا حَرَمُ نَبِيِّكَ فَاجْعَلْهُ وِقَايَةً لِيْ مِنَ النَّارِ وَآمِنَّا مِنْ الْعَذَابِ وَسُوْءِ الْحِسَابِ

Allāhumma hādhā ḣaramu nabiyyika fa j-‘alhu wiqāyatan lī mina n-nāri wa āminnā mina l-‘adhābi wa sū’i l-ḣisābi

O Allah! This is the Sacred Precinct of Your Prophet, so make it a protection for me from the Fire and a security from punishment and a bad reckoning. (Al-Ikhtiyar)

Du’a when Returning Home

At the end of your Hajj or travels you can recite the following as you return home:

آيِبُونَ تَائِبُونَ عَابِدُونَ لِرَبِّنَا حَامِدُونَ

Āyibūna tā’ibūna ‘ābidūna li rabbinā ḣāmidūna

(We are those) who return, who repent, who worship our Lord, who praise. (Muslim)

Do Angels Make Du’as for You?

We know from hadith that when you make du’a for your fellow Muslim in their absence, the angels make du’a for you. So use your time on Hajj or Umrah to make as much du’a as you can for your loved ones, your relatives, friends and the rest of the Muslim Ummah.

Abu Darda reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “No Muslim servant supplicates for his brother behind his back but that the angel says: And for you the same. (Sahih Muslim)”

Can You Ask Someone to Pray for You in Islam?

Generally speaking, it is halal and acceptable to ask someone to make du’a for you, especially if they are going on Hajj or Umrah but remember to place your trust with Allah, knowingly only He can answer your prayers. Whether you’re on Hajj or Umrah, or not, you should regularly be making du’a to Allah.
